Oliver Sears Gallery
Empire draws visual and conceptual influence from the mythology of the so-called “New World”—the 19th-century vision of the American frontier as an open, boundless, and bountiful landscape. Through hyper-detailed landscapes rendered in vibrant colour and fine brushwork, Eager Maher interrogates the visual tropes used to sell this dream of limitless opportunity and manifest destiny.
David Eager Maher’s work is inhabited by crumbling and obsolete cultural motifs and chronicles an imagined world. The quiet within each frame reflects the artist’s self-imposed isolation where, by confining himself to a small, focused existence, he can attempt to understand the history of a much bigger world; One where realism is not about real things but how things are really.
