SO Fine Art Editions
SO Fine Art Editions is delighted to present Symbiosis, an exhibition by Luxembourgish sculptural textile artist and experimental embroiderer Yanis Miltgen.
Moving from fashion into embroidery, and subsequently from embroidery and knitwear into sculpture, Miltgen has developed a distinctive sculptural language that challenges conventional understandings of textile art. A graduate of Atelier Chardon Savard (Paris) and Studio Eyral (south of France), he works at the intersection of craftsmanship, contemporary art and material innovation, drawing inspiration from nature, architecture and the possibilities of transformation.
The Symbiosis collection is rooted in the idea that a sculptural artwork can continually change its shape and volume because the pieces are entirely flexible. The title refers to a relationship or interaction between two dissimilar organisms organisms, and Miltgen extends this concept into a dialogue between material, form and environment. Combining embroidery and knitting techniques, he treats thread as a structural material rather than a decorative element, wrapping and weaving it around aluminium rods to create malleable sculptures. These works can be wall-mounted or suspended, allowing them to evolve in response to their surroundings and to take on different configurations.
Delicate, meticulous and intensely labour-intensive, Miltgen’s practice pushes the boundaries of embroidery, art knitting and thread crafts. Each creation can require between 300 and 1,500 hours of labour and incorporate up to 100,000 beads. This extraordinary level of detail offers a unique approach to contemporary sculpture and the understanding of space.

His practice brings together embroidery, knitting and contemporary materials such as metal and silicone, extending the possibilities of thread as a sculptural medium. Following the development of his first collection, Miltgen has expanded his work into artworks and gallery installations, establishing an increasingly experimental approach to the relationship between textile, structure and space.
Recurring themes of nature, time and imagination inform his work, through which he seeks to crystallise emotions and create visual and sensory experiences that invite contemplation. His sculptures occupy a space between the organic and the architectural, the delicate and the monumental, dissolving disciplinary boundaries through a bold and poetic artistic language.
With its combination of extraordinary craftsmanship, structural innovation and imaginative form, Symbiosis offers an opportunity to encounter textile sculpture as a continually evolving, tactile and spatial experience.
