Exhibition: Paul Nugent, Figures in Yellow Ochre Light and Other Paintings

Paul Nugent, Blue Monday No. 2., 2024 Oil on board, 67 x 87 cm (framed)

The gallery is pleased to present Figures in Yellow Ochre Light and Other Paintings by Paul Nugent.

The colour register of each painting emphasises a memory trace in the mind; seasons in particular locations. With time spent looking, each painting reveals its subject. The gathering of people in reverie around a central focus of smoke or illuminating fire. The smoke is indistinguishable from the sky.

Applications of Cadmium Yellow (pale) pigment are used to create the illusion of light from a fire permeating the surface of the painting, as in Illumination No.1. In Figures in Yellow Ochre Light, we glimpse four figures conversing, drums abandoned on the earth as the light bends between the central figure and a seated figure wearing wings. Gathering Red & Blue depicts figures evoking a ritualistic rites of passage. Attempting to transcend the mundane world, as suggested by the actions of the figures – some singing, some distracted, some in reverie.
