Solomon Fine Art is delighted to present a solo exhibition of new works by artist John Short. This vibrant exhibition will include a range of Short’s lively watercolour studies of popular Irish landmarks and bathing spots and will also feature ceramic works hand painted by the artist in collaboration with Geoffrey Healy Pottery.
Short is largely inspired by interactive groups and their behaviour; be they people, birds or animals. Rooted in observational drawings and sketchbook studies collected at sites near his native Dalkey and throughout Ireland, his energetic compositions retain a feeling of spontaneity and immediacy. Sea swimmers, anglers, animals and fellow travellers are captured within carefully considered and often unconventional perspectives. As part of this exhibition Short has teamed up with Wicklow based potter Geoffrey Healy and has introduced his popular Forty Foot Bathers to a range of unique, hand-painted stoneware pieces.
Born in Fife, Scotland John Short studied at the Edinburgh School of Art and received an MA from the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. He began his career producing drawings for Vogue, Harpers & Queen, The Irish Times, The Sunday Independent, The Guardian and The Sunday Times and is former Senior Lecturer in Drawing & Image Making in the School of Art & Design at TU Dublin. Short has earned multiple Irish & international awards, including the prestigious Artist Prize at the Royal Watercolour Society, London, the Arnott’s National Portrait Award, RCA drawing prize, RCA Berger Colour Prize, The Whyte’s Auctioneers award, K&M Evans award and The Watercolour Society of Ireland’s President’s award. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections such as the OPW State Art Collection, Bank of Ireland, the Shelbourne Hotel and Berger Paints. Most recently he completed a specially commissioned suite of prints for the King’s Inn Law Library in Dublin.
