Solomon Fine Art
Solomon Fine Art is delighted to host a solo exhibition of new work by master sculptor Michael Quane. This much anticipated show will include a range of Quane’s distinctive hand carved, figurative sculptures in limestone and marble.
One of Ireland’s most highly regarded contemporary sculptors Quane is best known for his works in polished marble and Kilkenny limestone. His traditional stone carving skills are used to produce figures, both real and imaginary, which combine strength and grace with a touch of quirky humour. Quane’s method of tooling the surface of the stone with a claw chisel creates a distinctive texture similar to cross-hatched pencil marks and is an indication of how his work evolves from the initial ‘drawing’ through to sculpture in the round.
Belonging includes some fine examples of the horses and riders for which Quane has become so well known, along with a number of his swimmers with buoyancy aids. In these Quane continues the exploration of gravity which underlies all his work. The dialectic between the heaviness of his medium and the lightness and poise of the figure is a source of tremendous pleasure.
