What’s Seldom is Wonderful: Leah Beggs

In a new collection of her expressive paintings Beggs responds to brief and fleeting moments of beauty in the ever-shifting, wild and transient weather of Ireland’s west coast.  A pause in a storm, a sudden burst of sun, a quiet after rain; we are reminded to take pause and savour these momentary events.

The paintings of Leah Beggs are inspired by memory and journeys through the Connemara landscape.  Although the subject matter can be recognised as landscape, it has an abstract quality to it as she tries to capture and portray the climatic qualities of a certain place at a certain point in time.

Beggs is a graduate of IADT, Dun Laoghaire and is currently based in Connemara, Co. Galway. She has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and in the UK. Her work forms part of various Irish collections including The OPW State Art Collection, Trinity College Dublin, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Savills, The Doyle Hotel Collection, Microsoft Irish Art Collection, Deloitte (Ireland), The Dean Hotel Galway, Alexandra College Dublin, Charleville Hotel, Rathmines and the Stephens Hall Hotel, Leeson Street. Beggs was also commissioned by the Office of Public Works to develop ten pieces which hang in the National Concert Hall, Dublin and Department of An Taoiseach respectively.

Beggs is a founding member of uachtarARTS, a community arts group in Oughterard, Co. Galway.  In 2011, 2013 & 2017 she was awarded an Individual Artist Bursary from Galway County Council, and 2023 received the Arts Council of Ireland Agility Award.
